The Punisher is More Dangerous Than Ever in New Comic Series

As part of Marvel Legacy, The Punisher donned the armor of the late James Rhodes and started taking punishment to another level. However, as part of the Fresh Start initiative, the character will once again be stripped of his armor in what appears to be a "back-to-basics" approach. That might not be the case, as writer Matthew Rosenberg has given fans an interesting pitch.

Speaking with Marvel about The Punisher #1, Rosenberg stated that Frank Castle might not have armor anymore but his taste for bigger criminals has only grown. Now armed with a knife and a handgun, he will be stalking the streets of New York City and other parts of the world for his warped version of justice.

Here's what Rosenberg had to say about bringing the character back to his roots:

"In some ways yes, and in some ways no. We're going to get back to Frank Castle with a handgun and a knife, stalking the streets of New York, and getting his hands dirty. But we're also going to see a man who has changed from his time in the armor. He developed a taste for bigger game and larger targets, and he's not going to give that up easily. So in a sense it's back to basics — but on a bigger scale."

Rosenberg won't be alone, however, as the Phoenix Resurrection writer will be paired up with Riccardo Burchielli of DMZ fame. The artist hasn't done much work for Marvel, so this is a pretty big deal, especially for fans of DMZ. His gritty art style suits Frank Castle's world really well and it should give us some shockingly good moments.

The Punisher #1 comes out on August 1. Rosenberg's current Legacy run with the character ends this July with a massive showoff against some of Marvel's heroes, including Iron Man.
