Rainn Wilson is probably best known for his role as insufferable nerd Dwight Schrute in The Office, and he has just been cast in the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery.
According to CBR, Wilson will be playing Original Series character Harcourt Fenton Mudd, a notorious conman who has had several run-ins with the crew of the USS Enterprise. The role of Mudd was originated by Roger C. Carmel, and he starred in two episodes as the character ā once in the first season episode Mudd's Women, and a second time in I, Mudd in season two.
Seeing that the series timeline is said to be occurring a decade before the original series, it would only make sense that classic characters would appear in the show.
Though Wilson has been cast as a recurring character, I think it would be farfetched to think he'd be a series regular; hopefully he has at least two episodes to appear.
Wilson will be working with a cast that includes the likes of Doug Jones, Michelle Yeoh, Mary Wiseman, and Jason Isaacs. Hopefully his portrayal of the character is fun enough that we can see him in future seasons of the show.
As of now, Star Trek: Discovery has been delayed from its May 2017 launch date, but expect it to come out on CBS sometime later this year.
