The New Mutants Actress Says the Movie has a Tone Unlike Any Other

X-Men fans knew that The New Mutants would be very different from the rest of the films in the mutant franchise once they got to see the first trailer for the movie. Unlike the rest of the films in the franchise which leaned into mutant superheroism, the trailer for The New Mutants showed how the film leans into its horror elements, exploring an entirely different genre in that X-Men movie fans aren't that used to.

As different as the movie is from the X-Men film franchise, The New Mutants star Anya Taylor-Joy says that fans are still going to enjoy the film for all of the unique elements it adds to the X-Men movies. The actress just recently spoke with members of the press (via ComicBook.com) during a set visit, and according to the actress, the film feels like a coming-of-age story mixed in with dark elements, levity, and superpowers.

"I think this is unlike any tone I've seen before on film in the sense that you've got a lot of things playing where, of course, we're superheroes, but Josh (Boone) is treating us very much like people," Taylor-Joy told the media, "At the core of the story, you have all of these kids that are growing up so we're battling different things. It very much has the feel of a coming-of-age story and then you have the darkness that comes with that, moments of levity and then, of course, we all have powers. It's very unique."

It's interesting to see The New Mutants exploring a different take on the comic book movie genre. Despite the hurdles that it's had to cross during its production, The New Mutants has become one of the most highly anticipated films this year.

The New Mutants premieres on April 3, 2020.
