While there, Leda crosses paths with Nina (Dakota Johnson) and her daughter.

Initially, the two start a friendly interaction with each other. But an obsession slowly comes into play.

“Alone on a seaside vacation, Leda becomes consumed with a young mother and daughter as she watches them on the beach. Unnerved by their compelling relationship, (and their raucous and menacing extended family), Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion, and intensity of early motherhood. An impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences,” the official synopsis reads.

While speaking with Deadline, the actress explained what made her decide to sign on for the project.

“When I finished reading Elena Ferrante's The Lost Daughter, I felt that something secret and true had been said out loud. And I was both disturbed and comforted by that. I immediately thought how much more intense the experience would be in a movie theatre, with other people around. And I set to work on this adaptation. I find that the script has attracted other people interested in exploring these secret truths about motherhood, sexuality, femininity, desire. And I'm thrilled to continue my collaboration with such brave and exciting actors and filmmakers,” she said.

Other than directing the film, Gyllenhaal also wrote the screenplay for The Lost Daughter.

“The process of taking a text as an actor, analyzing it, distilling it to, ‘Why is this scene in this movie? Why do I think it's important?’… is, in an emotional and intellectual way, very similar to the way I worked on adapting the book,” she said.

The over two-minute clip opens with Leda driving in her car on her way to the beach. The staff greets her, and she looks at the stunning view in front of her.

In the next scene, Leda is swimming in the ocean and having a relaxing time. But it doesn’t take her long to realize how many people are also at the beach.

The next scene shows her looking at Nina and her daughter. A female beachgoer who notices that she’s staring at the mother and daughter tandem asks Leda if she has children of her own, and she says she has two.

Another scene shows Leda seemingly stalking Nina and her daughter. Nina is surprised to see Leda at the store.

When Leda’s friend asked Leda what her daughters were like growing up, she told her that she couldn’t remember much.

Leda panics after hearing the question, suggesting that it’s something from the past that she doesn’t want to remember.

The teaser reveals that Nina’s daughter will go missing. And the biggest question is, does Leda know something about the tragic incident?
