The Last of Us: Naughty Dog Director Does Not Want Film Adaptation To Happen

When The Last of Us first came out on PS3, many considered it to as one of the most cinematic games out there. It's often considered as the greatest game Naughty Dog has ever released and the company made the Uncharted series, so that's saying something. So when a movie was announced, fans felt it was a good fit since the game is so cinematic.

However, there are those that don't want a movie of The Last of Us to happen, due to the poor reputation video game films have garnered. One of those people who don't want the film to come to light is Neil Druckmann, the creative director of Naughty Dog, and he actually wrote the film's script.

Speaking with 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg during the 2018 DICE Summit (via Screen Rant), Druckmann explained why he felt this way. Though he wrote the script to the film, in hindsight he thought it wasn't a good fit since it was an adaptation of the game.

"…And even I worked on the script for The Last of Us film, which was a direct adaptation. And now, having some separation from it, I look back and [am] like, ‘I don't want that movie to be made.'"

While Druckmann isn't interested in an adaptation of the game, he did express interest in a film that featured different characters but was set in the same universe. Druckmann also credited the Tom Holland-led Uncharted film since it's an origin story, something Naughty Dog never really dove into during all four games.

"Maybe there's something that could be done in the world, either focusing on other characters or other time. But, for me, and I know for Naughty Dog and for a lot of our fans, Nolan North is Nathan Drake, Ashley Johnson is Ellie, Troy Baker is Joel. And it would be very disorienting to see someone else in that role."

No release date for the film has been released. Fans can get The Last of Us right now on PS3 and a remastered version on PS4, which comes with the game's standalone expansion DLC. The Last of Us Part II is coming to PS4 as well, though no release date has been released.
