There is little doubt that there are some things in The Last of Us that were never confirmed until the HBO series was released. For instance, the live-action adaptation made it clear that Joel and Tess were in a relationship although this was never confirmed in the game. Now, Gabriel Luna has spoken up about Tommy's past relationships, confirming that his character had a romance with Firefly leader Marlene.

In HBO's The Last of Us series, it was revealed that Tommy had left the Fireflies and settled down in Jackson as a member of a commune. It is also confirmed that he has married Maria, who is carrying his child. However, Maria is hardly the first woman that Tommy has been in a relationship with after the apocalypse.

Gabriel Luna recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly where he shared how h and Merle Dandridge discussed how Tommy and Marlene's relationship should be played out in the show.

"In my mind, he and Marlene probably had a little thing going and it probably didn't end well when she, of course, has so much responsibility as the leader of the Fireflies in the Boston QZ," he said. Luna then added that the revolutionary group affected the bond between Tommy and Marlene.

I think that might have been the straw that sent Tommy on his own way," he said. "There's only so many times you can wake up every morning to see the woman you love and not be able to make it work."

Leaving Marlene and the Fireflies turned out to be the right move for Tommy as he ended up in a settlement where he would meet his future wife. Still, it's interesting to know that he may have joined the Fireflies in the first place because he fell in love with Marlene.

The Last of Us Episode 7 will premiere on HBO Max on Sunday, February 26, 2023.
