The Last Jedi: Here's How The Porg's Voices Were Created

Porgs were one of the more controversial aspects of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, even though they ended up being the least polarizing part of the film. Fans were worried that they would be as annoying as the Wookies but they weren't, though they didn't add much to the story either, which some fans would argue is worse. One thing is clear; they look cute and sound even cuter.

During a blog post in D23, sound designer Ren Klyce revealed how he ended up making the now famous Porg noises that were heard in the film. Rian Johnson, the now famous/infamous writer and director of The Last Jedi, tasked Klyce to come up with the perfect sounds for these cute-looking creatures.

"Rian gave us a bunch of adjectives as to what he didn't want it to be. He didn't want them to sound screechy, or irritating, or squawky. It was a matter of experimentingthroughfour or five versions of the sound."

Further elaboration later revealed that the Porg noises were made with a mixture of chicken and dove sounds. An artificial turkey noise from an intern was also added, which is actually a fairly interesting tidbit. It looks like things worked out for the best.

"At Skywalker Sound there's a chicken coop with these little chickens, and Coya Elliott, our first assistant, went down and recorded those chickens. And then we took that sound and slowed it down and stretched it out and found little chirps. We found this man who releases doves at weddings and we asked him to come down so we could record them. So we have a little snippet of that [turkey call], a little bit of chicken, a little dove, and cut it all together."

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now showing in theaters.
