The Karate Kid Is Getting A Sequel Series Called Cobra Kai; Ralph Macchio And Billy Zabka To Reprise Their Roles

After 30 years and pop culture cult status, The Karate Kid is coming back in the form of a sequel series called Cobra Kai, and original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka are returning to reprise their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cobra Kai will be a 10-episode comedy on Youtube Red and will focus on the story of Daniel and Johnny 30 years after their fight in the first movie. Apparently, Johnny will befriend one of Daniel's kids and he'll be attempting to reopen the Cobra Kai dojo, and Daniel on the other hand, is trying to find balance in his life without the help and wisdom of Mr. Miyagi.

Ralph Macchio describes the show:

"Johnny befriends one [of Daniel's kids], and that is how it connects that world into our own rivalry world… There's a tremendous amount of heart and kick-ass action sequences and martial arts, but the inherent humor comes from the fact that these are two guys who are in their 50s and still have an ax to grind. It goes back to those places where you just can't let go and you're still a teenager at heart and yet balancing your adult life — it's like the rise of the Cobra Kai. It's the worst nightmare for someone like Daniel LaRusso."

The premise actually seems fun, and there was a bidding war which included Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, with Youtube Red eventually securing rights to the show.

I have to be honest, I thought that the only attention Macchio and Zabka were getting lately was their guest stints at How I Met Your Mother, but it looks like the two are having fun with this new project of theirs.

Cobra Kai is set to come out sometime next year.
