Taika Waititi's Akira Adaptation Gains Some Life From California Tax Credits

Now that Alita: Battle Angel has shown Hollywood how to handle an anime property, fans are hoping that other studios follow suit and learn from that movie. One project that keeps on getting delayed is the live-action adaptation of Akira, which many consider as one of the best anime films ever made. Fans were already pleased when it was announced that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi would helm it but they might think it's weird how the movie will be filmed in California.

Yeah, a joint statement by the state of California and the California Film Commission (via Deadline) confirmed that 18 movies would be receiving allocations to film, provided they filmed entirely in the state. Among these films is Akira. Weirder things have happened.

There have barely been any updates on this movie, which made many of us assume that it was still in development hell. While that might still be the case, the fact that a filming location and a significant amount of money have been poured into the project proves that it's alive and, uh, being developed.

It's too soon to say if this film is alive and "well."

Akira currently has no release date. It will be directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio.
