Taika Waititi Talks The Alternate Death Scene For [SPOILER]

[THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THOR: RAGNAROK]

Thor: Ragnarok had just hit theaters last week, and it's turning out to be one of the most profitable movies for Marvel this year. The movie marked the death of Anthony Hopkins' Odin, but Taika Waititi reveals that they had a different idea for his scene in the original version of the movie.

Talking to Empire Online, Waititi explains:

"What we wanted originally was for Thor and Loki to find Odin in New York, living on the streets, Fisher King-style. There was something really cool and interesting about that, and I think that might be on the DVD, that version. But something about having him there and then dying made a lot of audiences in our test screenings feel too sorry for him. It was such a bummer seeing the great king of Asgard stuck in New York. We preferred the idea he'd be in some mystical Norse environment."

Early cuts of the trailers had Hela destroying Mjolnir in an alleyway, but the final cut had her appearing to Thor and Loki in a field of grass. Waititi had said before that the scene was added because they felt that Odin needed to exit the franchise in a better, more serene way. Accoding to them, having the King of Asgard die in an old New York alleyway as a hobo would not have been the best exit for the character.

Though I still think Odin's death was a bit too abrupt (as well as Hela's appearance), having him appear to his sons in the field of grass was way more dignified than dying as a homeless person in an alleyway. I'm just hoping we still get to see glimpses of Anthony Hopkins in the Marvel Universe. I'd like to see a flashback of Odin trying to fend off Thanos.

For now, you can catch Anthony Hopkins' Odin for (possibly) the last time in Thor: Ragnarok which is out in theaters now.
