Taika Waititi Says He Approached Thor: Ragnarok Like The First Two Films Didn’t Exist

Thor: Ragnarok might technically be the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Thor trilogy, but director Taika Waititi admits that he's trying his very best to distance his superhero space adventure from the first two Thor movies.

Marvel fans who've seen the previews to Ragnarok have noticed the many changes that Waititi's added to the Thor trilogy – not only does the director add layers of color to the film, but the New Zealand indie filmmaker also adds a dose of his offbeat comedic chops into the movie.

Speaking in an interview with io9 at last month's San Diego Comic Con, Waititi explains that though he did enjoy Thor and Thor: The Dark World, he wanted to make Ragnarok into some sort of standalone.

"To be honest, what I did was I tried to approach it as if there were no other films. I wanted to make this a standalone film.

I loved Thor 1 and Thor 2, but if I was going to make this film my own I couldn't come in and try to make a follow-on movie, to try to make the next episode. I wanted to do my own thing."

Waititi's always had a distinctive style and while some complain that Thor's become too much of an "airheaded bimbo" than an Asgardian god, we're definitely excited to see where Thor: Ragnarok's going to take us.

Thor: Ragnarok premieres November 3, 2017.
