The world is still reeling after a horrifying terrorist attack on two mosques in New Zealand left 49 people dead. Amidst all the chaos, director Taika Waititi has posted a heartfelt message for the victims as well as the Muslim community in the country.
Two mosques in Christchurch were targeted by a gunman who actually live-streamed the shooting on Facebook. The man chose to attack the mosques on Friday Prayer when the place of worship was packed with several people. It was truly a terrifying ordeal for Muslims. In a touching show of support, Waititi posted a message on Twitter.
"My heart is broken. My country is weeping and so am I. I am dying knowing that this kind of hatred can happen in my homeland. All my love goes out to Christchurch, the victims, the families, the Muslim community, and all who have chosen our islands as their home. This is not us," Waititi wrote.
The Thor: Ragnarok director also rallied Muslims to stand against the criminals, urging them to continue praying on Jummah.
"Do not allow those criminals the satisfaction. Go to Mosque, Church, Synagogue, Marae, Maunga. Sink into community and love. In the words of Bob, 'The people who are trying to make this world worse aren't taking a day off. How can I? Light up the darkness.' One Love," he wrote.
As of writing, there are 49 confirmed deaths at the mosque attacks. The gunman has been arrested and is being charged for murder.
