Western fans of the popular Sword Art Online anime franchise will soon finally get a chance to see the new film. Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale is a huge hit at the Japanese box offices and Asian countries such as Philippines (I've seen it being screened in a theater here) are already showing it in theaters, but fans in the US are still waiting. Thankfully, Fathom Events is starting a one night special event that will debut the film all around the U.S. with English subs. The event is on March 9, and it will also include unannounced bonus content.
Check out the synopsis:
"In 2022, the world of virtual reality was upended by the arrival of a new invention from a genius programmer, Akihiko Kayaba, called NerveGear. It was the first full-dive system, and with it, came endless possibilities to VRMMORPGs.
In 2026, a new machine called the Augma is developed to compete against the NerveGear and its successor, the Amusphere. A next-gen wearable device, the Augma doesn't have a full-dive function like its predecessors. Instead, it uses Augmented Reality (AR) to get players into the game. It is safe, user-friendly and lets users play while they are conscious, making it an instant hit on the market. The most popular game on the system is "Ordinal Scale" (aka: OS), an ARMMORPG developed exclusively for the Augma. Asuna and the gang have already been playing OS for a while, by the time Kirito decides to join them. They're about to find out that Ordinal Scale isn't all fun and games…"
I'm not a huge fan of the Sword Art Online franchise but the premise sounds intriguing enough and based on the trailer, it looks fun to watch.
The film grossed over 9 billion yen at the Japanese box office after just 9 days, and I'm sure a lot of fans in the U.S. will take this opportunity to watch this spectacular film. You can buy tickets at Fathom Events.
