The announcement came with new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate gameplay footage showcasing Kazuya. Fans of the Nintendo fighting game were anticipating Master Chief from Halo, so this was quite unexpected.

Kazuya appeared in all Tekken games except Tekken 3; he is the son of Heihachi and Kasumi Mishima. Although he's considered to be the main protagonist of the first Tekken game, he became one of the major antagonists since Tekken 2.

First released in 2018, Smash Bros. Ultimate received a variety of characters from non-Nintendo franchises such as Dragon Quest Hero, Persona 5's Joker, Steve (Minecraft), and Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII.

Kazuya will be the second-to-the-last character added to the game.
