Jared Leto's mesmerizing Joker in The Suicide Squad divided the fans - they either loved him or hated him. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, that ability to make his character stand out in a world inhabited by the strange and the odd makes Leto a great actor to cast in the futuristic cyberscape of Tron. After seven years of rumors since Tron: Legacy showed on our movie screens, there are new reports that Leto is in talks with Disney to play a major character in the third Tron film.
The Hollywood Reporter says that very little is known of the character that Leto might essay except his name: Ares. That in itself can be a significant clue as a moniker for the god of war sounds like it is a name used in the Tron world, and not the real world.
Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kozinski said that a third Tron film would have to explore how a sentient program can live and mingle in the human dimension. The two realms - cyber and 'real - would also have to collide on a huge scale.
But The Hollywood Reporter sources say that Leto's character is based not on a script for a sequel to Tron: Legacy but a parallel script that takes place in its timeline. Ares' storyline in relation to the first two Tron films would be like the convergence of the events in Star Wars: A New Hope and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Leto still has to deny or confirm the rumor. But if there are offers coming along his (or another actor's) way, that would be good news. Many feel that the Tron universe describes another chance. The first film, released in 1982, and the sequel in 2010 did not perform spectacularly at the box-office. But nobody can dispute the imaginative way they both pushed boundaries when it came to tackling the relationship between man and machines.
A good solid artist with cred on board, like Leto, may be the first step towards making a more successful third installment. And who knows---it might even lead to the creation of a new sci-fi franchise.
