Suicide Squad Beats Star Trek Beyond for Oscar Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Jared Leto's Joker may have the last laugh after all, as Suicide Squad, which was critically panned, beat the more commercially succesful and acclaimed Star Trek Beyond for Best Makeup and Hairstyling in the 89th Oscar Awards Night.

IMDB reports the award was given to Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini, and Christopher Allen Nelson.

Whatever one may think of the film, the makeup and hairstyling crew really dug deep into their wardrobe and creative juices to come up with individual looks for the ragtag bunch of misfits, assassins, and criminals who would be given a deadly second chance for freedom. Star Trek Beyond did try to go beyond its traditional formula of aliens-looking-like-humans-except-for-their-foreheads. One race was equipped with an Alien-like-facehugger-head, and another mixed zebra colors with a shellfish-like cranium. But in the end, they didn't have a prayer - not when each hue, piece of clothing, and accessory on each Suicide Squad character spoke volumes about that anti-hero and what he or she was capable of.

In the end, the costumes and hairstyles in Suicide Squad helped shape the soul of the characters. That's why they won the award. And, critical complaints aside, why there's enough of a fan base to make a second movie.

Suicide Squad was directed by David Ayer and starred Jared Leto, Will Smith, and Margot Robbie.
