One of the main antagonists in Stranger Things besides the Demogorgon are the people in the Hawkins Lab, and one of the head honchos is Dr. Brenner who is played by Matthew Modine. The second season had Modine popping up here and there in flashbacks and visions, but EP Shawn Levy has seemingly confirmed that Brenner is still alive.
Talking to Collider, Levy explains:
"We took a big swing for instance to open the show with a car chase in another city, then Episode 7 goes to another city for an entire episode. Whether or not people feel that episode was entirely successful, the Duffers want to take some swings, and they know that they're not gonna please everybody. But that feeling of the world getting a bit bigger especially coupled with the fact that it now seems clear thatBrenner is alive, Brenner is out there. I for one think that that one scene with Modine and Millie in Episode 7 is one of the juiciest scenes, and it kind of brought me back to how haunting Modine is in that Brenner role. So that's a major unanswered question, and also we've now confirmed that Eleven isn't the only one. There are other numbers."
While a lot of people consider Episode 7 to be a sharp detour from the main story, there's no denying that the episode has given us more insight on the experimented children from the Hawkins Lab. Now we know there are more kids like Eleven, and that their powers don't necessarily function like hers.
As for Dr. Brenner, the last time we saw him was when was pounced on by a Demogorgon; and though he is considered dead, his presence is still heavily felt in season two. I can't imagine why the Demogorgon would spare him and kill everyone else, but I'm having a feeling that Brenner has his own set of powers too.
I guess we'll just have to keep watching to find out.
