Stranger Things 2: Here's How [SPOILER] Was Originally Supposed To Die

[THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR STRANGER THINGS SEASON 2]

Stranger Things 2 is another smash hit for Netflix, and the second season has managed to introduce us to all-new likeable characters in the forms of Max, Billy, and Bob. It was previously revealed that Bob was supposed to die way earlier in the season, but since the Duffers liked Sean Astin so much, they decided to expand his role. What's interesting is, Bob was supposed to die differently before they decided to rewrite his character.

Talking to Collider, EP Shawn Levy reveals that Bob was originally supposed to be killed by a possessed Will Byers. Levy explains:

"[Killing a main character] was never on the table. We had talked about the death of some major characters, that may or may not happen in the future near or far. But that was never part of the discussion for Season 2. The death of Bob was initially much earlier. In fact, in an early outline, Evil Will [killed] him in like Episode 3."

There were no specific details on how Will was going to kill Bob, but he was supposed to do it while Bob was giving him advice on how to deal with nightmares.

I'm very happy that they decided to expand Astin's role for the show, and to someone incredibly useful as well. Bob was able to read Will's drawings as a map and he was also able to take control of the doors in the Hawkins Lab. By the end of the show, you'd understand why he was perfect for Grace Byers.

The Duffer Brothers predicted that Bob was the new Barb of the season in the sense that everyone was going to love him, but I also didn't realize that he was also supposed to die. Damn, Stranger Things, you're almost as sadistic as Game of Thrones when it comes to killing off characters we like.

Catch Stranger Things 2 now out on Netflix.
