Steven Spielberg Will Produce (And Possibly Direct) DC's Blackhawk

However you felt about Ready Player One, there's no doubting Steven Spielberg's directing ability. It's clear that the acclaimed filmmaker is still a hot commodity, so DC and Warner Bros. announcing that Spielberg will be producing and maybe even directing a Blackhawk movie is a pretty big deal.

The news was broken by DC Comics and its really interesting to see the director involved in this universe, even if the property being adapted has little to do with superpowers. Spielberg has hopes to direct the film, though he can't seem to confirm if he can. At least we know that he will be producing the movie.

Spielberg's frequent collaborator David Koepp will be writing the film's screenplay. Koepp had previously written Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull for Spielberg. He's clearly proven himself in the past, so he should do well here.

In the world of comics, Blackhawk is a wartime adventure series focusing on the titular Blackhawk, who commanded a squadron of ace pilots also known as the Blackhawks or the Blackhawk Squadron. The squadron would battle the Axis powers, as well as more fantastic super-villains and war machines, such as the memorable shark planes, which could operate in water as well as in the air.

While the team debuted in 1941 in the heart of comics' Golden Age, they've also been adapted to the modern era as a part of The New 52 and have spawned a well-known DC heroine, Lady Blackhawk, who joined the series in the late 1950s.

No release date for the film has been announced.
