Star Wars: There Are Still No Plans To Have Rian Johnson Direct Episode IX

After Lucasfilm announced that they were firing Colin Trevorrow from the director's chair of Star Wars Episode IX, some fans suggested that they have The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson take over the movie as well. As of now, however, Johnson looks to be focusing on the release of TLJ and Episode IX seems to be the least of his worries.

While promoting the film in Japan (via Star Wars News Net), Johnson was asked about the rumors about him directing the finale of the sequel trilogy. To which he says:

"It was never in the plan for me directing Episode IX. I don't know what's gonna happen. I was entirely focused on Episode VIII. So now I'm not really thinking about that right now. Sit down and see who [will be] the next filmmaker."

With all the news of Lucasfilm firing their directors, it looks like Johnson is currently in the good graces of the studio. He seems to get the creative freedom he wants without getting himself into trouble, so I can imagine Kathleen Kennedy eager to have Johnson back on board.

It would be a shame, however, to break the cycle and have a Johnson direct the last two movies in the sequel trilogy. I thought Lucasfilm was trying to replicate the same effect of the original trilogy with a different director for each entry.

As of now, Star Wars Episode IX has no director, but we can just focus on the release of The Last Jedi which hits theaters Dec. 15.
