Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s John Boyega Says Franchise Should Be More Progressive

Finn might not be the first person of color in the Star Wars franchise, but John Boyega's stormtrooper-turned-Resistance-fighter certainly is one of the first black characters to nab a leading role in the Skywalker saga.

Lucasfilm has been pushing for diversity and representation in its massive, long-running science fiction franchise, and while the Star Wars sequel trilogy's main hero has been the orphaned Force-sensitive Rey (Daisy Ridley), the story's also been very much about Finn as well.

Now, speaking in an interview with Metro, Boyega discusses the studio's responsibility to feature inclusion and proper representation in their films. According to an actor, progressive changes have to be made in the franchise as well as in Hollywood industry, both behind and in front of the camera.

"There definitely is that responsibility, but more the responsibility to hire those from those experiences to share their creative light, that's the pivotal thing. Because if you just hire the same sort of people you're just getting the same sort of film. It's not wrong, but then there's a lack of variety."

The Star Wars franchise is one that is loved by all sorts of people around the globe, and it doesn't hurt that Boyega wants Lucasfilm and other big studios to take on a more progressive stance in the production of their films. After all, don't we all love seeing a character we can relate and see ourselves in on the big screen? Shouldn't we share that joy with everyone?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres December 15, 2017.
