Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Wanted To Turn Luke Into A Blind Samurai

It looks like Luke (Mark Hamill) would have been blind in Star Wars: The Last Jedi if director Rian Johnson had decided to go through with the idea of a blind samurai for the upcoming Star Wars sequel trilogy installment.

While The Force Awakens was tasked with reintroducing Star Wars icons like Luke, Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Han (Harrison Ford), The Last Jedi had to figure out the direction of the characters, and Lucasfilm had decided that Luke's arc was always going to be a critical part of the movie.

Sitting down with Vanity Fair, Johnson revealed that he had some fresh ideas in an attempt to reinvent Luke, and one of them was to turn him blind.

"Did I ever tell you that early on when I was trying to figure out the story for this, I had a brief idea I was chasing where I was like, ‘What if Luke is blind?' What if he's, like, the blind samurai?' But we didn't do it. You're welcome. Didn't stick."

Turning Luke into a blind samurai might have been a cool idea, but it would have posed a few problems for the Jedi. Not only would it sour the meeting between Luke and Rey (Daisy Ridley) in the Force Awakens when audiences realize in The Last Jedi that the character's blind, it would be difficult for Luke to stay on Ahch-To, knowing how high up the cliffs the place is.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits cinemas December 15, 2017.
