Star Wars: The Last Jedi Director Says He Had “Creative Control” Over Project

Yesterday Lucasfilm announced that Han Solo spinoff directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller had been taken off the Star Wars project because of "creative differences."

The news not only shocked fans who had observed the progress of the film's smooth sailing production, it also lead to rumors that the studio was also crimping its directors and crimping their creativity after reports revealed that Lucasfilm disliked the comedic direction Lord and Miller were taking Han Solo.

Now, responding to those rumors, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson tells fans that he was actually given a lot of creative control over The Force Awakens sequel. Fans have been taken aback by the sudden turn of events in the Han Solo production, and some have begun hounding Johnson for his comments months earlier about the extensive freedom Lucasfilm gave him on The Last Jedi.

Based on Lucasfilm's interviews about Johnson and the director's stories about working on The Last Jedi, it seems like the studio has a lot of respect for the indie filmmaker's creative decisions. Though some might think that the studio hasn't been as strict with Johnson as with Lord and Miller on Han Solo, it's very likely that studio is actually pleased with what Johnson is bringing to the sequel trilogy and displeased with the Han Solo director's output.

Hopefully Lucasfilm will be able to find a new director for the project quickly and get Han Solo's production gears turning again.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits cinemas on December 15, 2017.
