Star Wars: The Force Awakens Pirated Blu-Ray Leaked

The home release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is less than two weeks away, but Blu-ray-quality copies of the film have already leaked online on popular piracy websites.

According to piracy-news site TorrentFreak, the first pirated copies came late Tuesday. In 12 hours, around 250,000 people had already downloaded the copy. The site reports that the pirated copies come with an accompanying image indicating that it was taken from a regular retail DVD.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has grossed more than $2 billion at the worldwide box office since its December 2015 release. That number is expected to grow with the film's digital release on April 1 shortly followed by its Blu-ray/DVD release on April 5.

It's not the first time that the film has been pirated. Last year, shortly after The Force Awakens' debut in theaters, low-quality "cam" rips popped up on pirate sites as well.

With the current leak of DVD-quality copies of the film, sale of the home copies could be greatly affected.
