Star Wars: The Force Awakens BB-8 App-Enabled Droid Unveiled


BB-8, the new droid in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, stole the show in the first teaser for J.J. Abrams' film, and again on Star Wars Celebration Anaheim, where it was revealed that the droid is a practical effect. Now, the droid rolled again into hearts during the 18-hour Global Unboxing event held by Lucasfilm. 

This time, it's a BB-8 that you can buy, and like the film, it works, and you can control it with a remote control app on a smart phone. The fist-sized droid can be re-charged in its station. The video stream shows the droid rolling, and its coolest feature: you can record a video message in "holographic" form, that plays through an augmented reality part of the app - by viewing at your BB-8 through your phone's camera, you can see the hologram shown behind it. Watch the video below: 

 

The BB-8, by Sphero, will be available on Friday September 4, 2015, at a suggested retail price of $149.99
