Star Wars: The Clone Wars Almost Didn't Feature Anakin Skywalker And Obi-Wan Kenobi

Star Wars: The Clone Wars certainly allowed fans to learn more about Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, the animated series was originally meant to feature less of the iconic trilogy characters.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars followed Anakin and Obi-Wan in the events that took place between the prequel films Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. The series also featured characters like Chancellor Palpatine, Count Dooku, Mace Windu, and Darth Maul. However, Dave Filoni has admitted to CinemaBlend that the original plan for the animated show focused on unknown characters.

"That was something that when I was working early on with Henry Gilroy, we were trying to figure out what the character makeup of the show was going to be and how we could produce a TV series based in the time of the Clone Wars because the Clone Wars is so vast and would require literally thousands of clones battling thousands of battle droids, and so we were shooting around more of an original trilogy idea of a crew, two Jedi that worked with these smugglers and black market."

It certainly sounds like Filoni initially intended The Clone Wars to be more like Star Wars Rebels, which features two Jedi teaming up with a group of rebels and outcasts.

Filoni also revealed that one person was instrumental in making sure The Clone Wars was all about Anakin and Obi-Wan. The producer shared that George Lucas somehow convinced him to get rid of his original concept for the animated series.

"We just never presumed that we would be working with those characters. Because my idea was who am I to write Anakin Skywalker? That's a hugely important character. But George was like, 'Well, I'm going to teach you all about this.' And he did. So we wound up with the show we did under his direction."

Star Wars: The Clone Wars will return with 12 new episodes that will be available on Disney's direct to consumer streaming service.
