Star Wars: Rey's Force Vision From TFA Is 'Essential' To The Last Jedi

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we watched Rey get freaked out when she held Luke Skywalker's lightsaber and she was met with a supercut of Force visions. We got to see glimpse of old Luke Skywalker and the Knights of Ren, and as per Rian Johnson, this scene will also be essential to Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Talking to Rolling Stone, Johnson admits:

"So what seems like a blue sky suddenly turns into hacking in the jungle, finding a path that exists. Just like any process of writing, it's more excavation than sculpture… You're finding [the story] as you go, and you realize it wants to be a certain thing. So yeah, the flashback was essential, but the dynamic between each of the characters was essential. Every single thing in The Force Awakens, I studied forensically."

Johnson also talks about how J.J. Abrams helped him construct the story while he was developing The Force Awakens:

"I love The Force Awakens, and my job was to continue that story in every sense of the word… in that way, J.J. gave me everything I needed, which is the first chapter of a story. I need to tell a second chapter, which is a failure if it doesn't continue organically what the first chapter started."

Just looking at the trailers for The Last Jedi, it's very likely that we'll be seeing yet another flashback, but this time, we'll be seeing the fall of Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy. It was teased during Rey's Force vision in the first movie, and I would like to see all the dots connect in TLJ.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out Dec. 15.
