While the last scene of Star Wars: The Force Awakens still gives birth to theories of the link between Luke Skywalker and the new girl Rey, it seems that the book by Timothy Zane is far from giving more support to this.
That's because he doesn't seem keen on bringing back a character that could easily further the fan theories surrounding Rey's lineage. Mara Jade, a former Imperial assassin who became Luke's wife, may no longer go back to the official canon of the universe.
According to Inverse, the author of the character doesn't seem interested in pushing her into the canon since the newest book didn't even bring the character back. In the novel Thrawn, Zahn had hinted that even if he was able to include a lot of the characters from Heir to the Empire into the real canon via the upcoming book, it didn't mean everyone. He was quick to note that it did not include "the one you're thinking of."
The interconnectedness of the novels, Star Wars: Rebels, and even that last scene in Star Wars: The Force Awakens could have seen a full circle, had the novel touched on Mara. That's because she had been killed by Jacen Solo, which is Han and Leia's son (technically, Kylo Ren in the movie).
It doesn't take a leap of faith to imagine Luke standing in a field that may actually be the grave of his late wife at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens either and that would have been an interesting opening for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
We can only hope to find more answers to the questions of the characters' past come Dec. 15, when the next Star Wars movie will premiere. For those who want to get more Grand Admiral Thrawn, Zahn's new novel Thrawn will hit the shelves on April 11.
