Star Wars: Mark Hamill Says Carrie Fisher is Irreplaceable As Princess Leia

Star Wars: Episode IX is coming out next year and fans have wondered how the story continues without Carrie Fisher. The actress has been playing Leia Organa for years and losing her was a tragedy and a big blow to the franchise. Rumors, reports, and even petitions have surfaced about getting Fisher's good friend Meryl Streep to play as the character.

Mark Hamill has shared his thoughts on the matter and it looks like he would rather not have a new Leia for future films.

Talking with Collider, Hamill was asked about the possibility of having Fisher replaced by Streep or any other actress. While he wasn't sure what the plans for Leia were going forward, Hamill had assumed that she would have a much larger role since The Force Awakens focused on Han Solo and The Last Jedi gave some of the spotlight to Luke Skywalker.

In the end, he says that his late friend is irreplaceable as Leia and many fans will likely agree with the actor.

"I think it would be tough recasting, only because she's so indelibly linked with that character. They've already ruled out the idea of computer generating her performance like they did with Peter Cushing. So gee, that's really got to be… not an insurmountable problem… but I know the script had been developed enough so that when we lost her they had to go back to square one. But she's irreplaceable, as far as I'm concerned."

Star Wars: Episode IX comes out on December 20, 2019.
