Star Wars: The Last Jedi recently grossed over $1 billion, becoming the highest-grossing 2017 film in North America. What's more impressive is that Lucasfilm's franchise has surpassed the Harry Potter franchise's global box office record but only by a little bit.
The Star Wars franchise has earned $8.55 billion worldwide, beating the current total of the Potter movie franchise which currently stands at 8.53 billion. As impressive as that may be, it's still not the highest-grossing movie franchise of all time.
Of course, that title belongs to Disney's other major franchise: the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has earned $13.5 billion worldwide to date. The franchise has already 17 films so it's not really a fair comparison. It's likely that the MCU will continue to be on top since the franchise is pumping out more movies each year compared to Star Wars or Harry Potter.
While Fantastic Beasts 2 is expected to release later this year, it would be tough for the Harry Potter franchise to catch up, especially when Disney and Lucasfilm continue to release a Star Wars film every year. Solo: A Star Wars Story will be released this May, and Episode IX will be out in December 2019. On top of that, Rian Johnson is expected to start filming his new Star Wars trilogy later this year.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now showing in theaters.
