Is Star Wars Battlefront 3 coming? It's been five years since Electronic Arts and DICE released Star Wars Battlefront 2, and while the focus in on Battlefield games, fans are hoping that the next Star Wars shooter is also in development, and that it would get released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Earlier this year, EA confirmed that a new Star Wars first-person shooter is in development at Respawn Entertainment. And while details and the game's title are still being kept under wraps, some fans surmised that this project could end up being Star Wars Battlefront 3, but did EA already confirm this?
Here's everything known about Star Wars Battlefront 3:
Did EA already confirm Star Wars Battlefront 3?
In January 2022, EA and Lucasfilm Games announced that developer Respawn Entertainment was working on three new video games associated with the Star Wars IP. One of the games is described to be a Star Wars first-person shooter game, and director Peter Hirschmann is said to be helming it. Respawn has experience in the FPS genre with games like Apex Legends and Titanfall, so it makes sense that the studio would be tapped to develop a Star Wars game in this genre.
However, EA hasn't officially confirmed if this project is Star Wars Battlefront 3. While some fans speculated it to be third installment of the popular shooter franchise, video game industry reporter Jeff Grubb quickly shot down the notion that Respawn would be working on Star Wars Battlefront 3.
Over on Twitter, Grubb said that the new Star Wars game from Respawn would "absolutely not" be Battlefront 3.
At of late September 2022, the current rumor is that Star Wars Battlefront 3 has not entered production as EA reportedly decided not to move forward with it, instead choosing to focus on its own Battlefield franchise.
According to writer Tom Henderson, EA shot down DICE's pitch to make Battlefront 3 due to licensing costs.
With this in mind, it seems that the Star Wars Battlefront series is on ice as DICE, the previous developer of the series, also hasn't shared any updates regarding a new installment in the franchise.
Back in January 2022, VentureBeat reported that DICE, the developer of the 2015 and 2017 Battlefront games, is not planning to make a third entry in the series. According to the report, DICE will be focusing on the Battlefield series in the future, with the development of EA's Star Wars games being developed by Respawn. Battlefront 3 from DICE was never in the first place, Jeff Grubb said on Twitter.
In June 2022, The Book of Boba Fett star Temuera Morrison teases (via Gaming Bible) that a new Star Wars game may be in the works.
As of October 18, 2022, there are no updates about Star Wars Battlefront 3.
Is Star Wars Battlefront 3 going to be released for PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and Nintendo Switch?
If Star Wars Battlefront 3 is officially confirmed, it will likely be released for PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch. The previous Star Wars Battlefront games were made available across different platforms, so a new installment would likely be released for different consoles and PC.
As for Nintendo Switch in particular, no Star Wars Battlefront games have been released for it, and it's likely that Nintendo may have a new console out by the time Battlefront 3 comes out - if ever, so it's likely that it will be released for that new console instead.
Are there any leaked images for Star Wars Battlefront 3 already?
In 2006, rumors surfaced that Star Wars Battlefront 3 (what would be the third games of the first Battlefront series) was in the works at Free Radical Design, and these rumors were eventually proven to be legit. However, in 2008, the developer had lost the right to work on the game. Years later, Free Radical Design co-founder Steve Ellis said that the project was near completion when it was canceled in 2008. Several footages, screenschots, and renders of this project eventually emerged online, but nothing substantial.
Now, a Redditor claims to have a PSP copy of the canceled Star Wars Battlefront 3 game. Redditor MissFeepit claims that a relative of their fiance had Lucasarts as a client years ago, which sounds sketchy, but photos of this PSP game was shared online.
