Star Wars Battlefront 2 Offers Payable Unlocks

Perhaps one of the biggest issues in games, apart from bugs, would be the imbalance of player levels following purchasable goods and level-ups.

Pay-to-win will always be a difficult hurdle to overcome, and if EA isn't careful, this same issue may plague Star Wars Battlefront II. According to a recent interview with Eurogamer, one EA rep has confirmed that crates, which contain rewards, can be purchased to accelerate in the game:

"Players will be rewarded in the game through regular play in many different, earnable ways including crates. For those that want to accelerate the rewards, they can do so by purchasing crates that contain randomized items and rewards."

It's easy to assume that this would immediately mean a pay-to-win scenario, especially if you can move forward with crates easily. However, he wording does hint that even with purchased crates, the items that can be obtained are randomized. This means that players won't really be able to manipulate the kind of rewards that can be obtained via in-game purchases.

What's more, it's also possible that the rewards that are purchasable may be limited to cosmetic items. EA has done previous games that allowed for purchasable cosmetic goods that were meant to advance only in aesthetics and not gameplay or progress levels.

Hopefully, EA will follow its other games, like Battlefield, which chooses to make cosmetic items as the only ones available for paid content. As with any format, the pay-to-win structure is always a hard thing to deal with. A lot of players are left to faithfully grind their way to get new items and powerups, while those who are able to spend can easily bypass this and dominate the game.

We'll have to see how things play out when Star Wars Battlefront II gets released on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on Nov. 17.
