Star Trek: Discovery Producer Officially Confirms The Show's Timeline

Star Trek: Discovery has offiically been confirmed to return to the original, prime timeline of the franchise.

The upcoming sci-fi series has been presumed to be part of the same timeline as Star Trek: The Original Series since it has always been described as a prequel to it, but fans have been taken aback by how different Discovery is compared to previous Star Trek shows, making them wonder about its continuity. Fans were not sure whether it will be set in the alternative universe of the Star Trek movie reboot, the Kelvin timeline, or a new timeline we haven't seen yet. Now, we finally know.

While speaking in the CBS All Access Television Critics Association presentation (via Comicbook), executive producer Akiva Goldsman confirmed that Star Trek: Discovery is set in the same timeline as Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and all other Star Trek TV shows that followed.

The new series will be set a decade before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series, an era which has been explored previously in Star Trek novels. However, Goldsman explained that the books are not a part of the same continuity as Star Trek: Discovery.

"We are considering the novels not to be canon, but we are aware of them," Goldman said, explaining: "It is its own standalone story with its own characters and its own unique vision of Trek."

Set 10 years prior to the five-year mission of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery follows the adventures of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship, new characters, and new missions while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.

Star Trek: Discovery is set to premiere on CBS on September 24.
