Star Citizen is Now Selling Digital Plots of Land With Real Money

Star Citizen, the ambitious massively-multiplayer space trading and combat video game from Chris Roberts and his team at Cloud Imperium Games (CIG), is now selling plots of digital land.

Although the game hasn't been released yet, you can purchase a four-kilometer square plot zone on any "planet, moon, or asteroid" under United Empire of Earth (UEE) control for either commercial, industrial or residential use. They haven't announced when the land claims can be made.

"These claim licenses are being made available for pledging to help fund Star Citizen's development," CIG explained on its storefront page. "The ability to obtain these claim licenses will ultimately be available for in-game credits and/or otherwise earnable through play in the game. Pledging for these claim licenses now allows us to include deeper features in the Star Citizen game, and is not required for starting the game."

If you're worried that the "best" plots of digital land will be taken, Robert Space Industries assures you that won't be an issue. Since the game will have billions of kilometers available, and more being added, "all players will have the ability to find and claim new 'hot spots.'"

"We'll be able to have whole worlds — planets, moons — that you can walk all over and that are rendered out to the kind of high level of first-person detail that we are going for in Star Citizen," Roberts explained. "A planet or a moon is going to feel pretty empty if you just have one location to go and visit on it. So we've been very focused on what other things we could do on the planets, like building out the ecosystems, distributing resources."

CIG also shared a comprehensive FAQ covering issues such as trespassing, potential in-game advantages, land quality, and other edge-case scenarios.

Since its development in 2011, Star Citizen project has relied mostly on backers for its income. The game has raised more than $168 million so far, which makes it the single most-funded crowdfunding campaign of any kind, on any platform, ever.

Star Citizen is currently in active development but it still has no official release date.
