Sonic the Hedgehog Speeds into $100M Worldwide Opening Weekend

It looks like the costly redesign was worth it after all. Sonic the Hedgehog has just turned in an astonishing $100 million on its opening weekend across the globe.

In a new report from Boxoffice Pro, Sonic's domestic box office haul is currently estimated at $57 million while the international box office is at around $43 million. The estimate for the domestic box office is only for the three-day weekend but it is believed that the numbers would get even better if one considers the four-day weekend in North America. This could mean that releasing the film on Valentine's Day and the long President's Day weekend was an excellent move.

It is important to point out that the numbers are based on estimates and could be different from the final outcome. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.

For now, we can't be too certain about how well Sonic the Hedgehog did in the box office. Nevertheless, director Jeff Fowler is already thanking fans for their support.

There have been concerns that Sonic will be a huge flop following the major backlash when its first trailer was released. However, Paramount Pictures decided to delay the film's release in order to redesign the character's look in favor of the fans. Needless to say, fans seem to appreciate what the studio has done for the Sega character.

Sonic the Hedgehog stars Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, and James Marsden. The movie is currently screening in theaters worldwide.
