Sonic The Hedgehog Director Won't Return for the Threequel

After two years of waiting, the sequel to 2020's Sonic The Hedgehog is finally coming this month. Director Jake Fowler made his directorial debut in the 2020 Sonic The Hedgehog film, the first live-action adaptation of the famously known SEGA video game. The film follows Sonic's arrival on Earth, befriending a small-town cop Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), and his wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter) while trying to outrun mad scientist, Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik (Jim Carrey) who wants to experiment with his kind.

Following the first film's immense box office success, director Jeff Fowler is back to helm Sonic The Hedgehog 2 alongside original writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller. The sequel brings back Sonic trying to outrun Dr. Robotnik again but this time has to go face to face against his rival hedgehog Knuckles. Sonic is also forced to team up with his new friend Miles, AKA "Tails" Prower. Now that Sonic is doing well with Paramount Pictures, the possibility of the threequel arises, especially after a Knuckles spinoff series is rumored to be in early development.

In a recent interview with Collider, director Jeff Fowler sat down to discuss the upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog 2. When Fowler was asked about the possibility of him returning for the threequel, the director admitted that he is not officially involved with Sonic The Hedgehog 3 at the moment. Although he would love to come back to direct the film. Fowler responded, "Nothing would make me happier, I’m not officially involved with any of the additional films yet, but I’m so proud of this movie, I’m so proud of the first movie, so excited for fans to see it. They’re really incredible movies to make. “

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is reportedly still in the early stages of development. Also, it's too early for Paramount Studio to choose a man behind the upcoming threequel. Director Jeff Fowler is currently attached to the live-action The Pink Panther reboot, though the development remains quiet, this might cause the scheduling conflict that prevents him from returning for Sonic The Hedgehog 3.

We will certainly love it if Jeff Fowler comes back to direct Sonic The Hedgehog 3. Fowler established a good reputation for the film and defied all the critics' negative reviews from the first and second films.

For now, we can catch up on Sonic The Hedgehog 2, premiering in theaters on April 8.
