The success of the first two Sonic the Hedgehog films has prompted Paramount Pictures to greenlight a third film and a Knuckles spinoff series that will stream on Paramount+. While no director or cast has officially signed on to the project yet, the studio is already eager to move forward with the third outing of our favorite hedgehog.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Pictures has set a December 20, 2024 release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The film's pre-Christmas release will put it in direct competition against Avatar 3, which is currently scheduled for release in theaters on the same day.

In addition, the studio also announced that the untitled animated Smurfs animated musical that was originally dated for December 20, 2024, will now be released instead on February 14, 2025.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which was released last April, held the record for the biggest domestic opening weekend for a video game-based film beating the first one. It ended up grossing more than $400 million at the worldwide box office which is an impressive feat considering that it opened during the COVID-19 pandemic era.

So far, no returning cast members have been confirmed to be part of the third film. Jim Carrey, who plays Dr. Robotnik, previously expressed his intention to retire from acting after the second film. The producers have also stated that the role will not be recast if Carrey proceeds with his retirement.

Now that it is dated for the holiday 2024 release, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be facing a new environment as the previous two films were released during spring. The third film will now be part of the crowded holiday season which is known to be the time where a lot of audiences go to the movie theaters.
