Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Nabs $71M at the Domestic Opening Weekend Box Office

There was a lot of anticipation leading up to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 thanks to the success of the first film and the excitement on the inclusion of Tails and Knuckles in the story so people are wondering about how it will do well at the box office. As it turns out, it actually did very well more than what everyone might be expecting.

According to Box Office Mojo, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 took the number one spot at the domestic opening weekend box office as it nabbed $71 million surpassing the first film's $58 million. It was beyond the studio's projection as they were predicting it to open at around $50 million. It is also the biggest opening weekend for a video game film adaptation and the best as well in Jim Carrey's career.

Morbius was in second place earning $10.2 million and a whopping 74% drop which is one of the worst second-weekend drop for a Marvel movie. Another new film last weekend, Michael Bay's Ambulance, only managed to earn a disappointing $8.7 million which is the lowest in the director's career although, unlike most of his films, it only has a modest budget.

It is very impressive to hear that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 managed to take the number one spot and surpass the box office projects as it just shows that there are a lot of people who were looking forward to seeing the film and a lot of family audience also showed up even though we are still in the middle of the pandemic. This should bode well for the film's box office performance in the next few weeks as it is very likely to have great legs as hinted by its "A" CinemaScore.

Fortunately, a third film is now in the works and a spinoff series on Paramount+ centering on Knuckles so this impressive box office record further solidifies that the franchise will have a brighter future ahead as they expand the Sonic the Hedgehog world and explore more characters from the games.
