Solo Writer Doesn't Think Marvel's Style of Comedy Works for Star Wars

Solo: A Star Wars Story comes out next week and fans cannot wait to see it, thanks to some strong marketing material and a solid Rotten Tomatoes grade. Part of that is because Chris Miller and Phil Lord were originally the directors since the duo is renowned for their comedic style. Ron Howard has since replaced them and though the film still has comedy, it's still focused on the story.

It turns out that the duo was hoping to make the film similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, due to their improvisation style of filming, which is what lead to their dismissal since that comedy style doesn't mesh with Star Wars. Solo writer Lawrence Kasdan agrees with this, telling Indiewire that the comedy-centric style of writing isn't Star Wars.

"It may be that the times and the zeitgeist dictate that at some point. But we're not at that point, in my mind. And look, I'm about through with ‘Star Wars,' so maybe other people [involved in the franchise] will feel differently. But, I love ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,' and I like that kind of movie. To me, it isn't what ‘Star Wars' is."

While Kasdan is a fan of Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok, he feels that this style doesn't mesh with the spirit of the franchise. Having a degree of seriousness seems to be a big crucial part to fans since some of them felt that The Last Jedi had too many jokes, even if it did have a lot of serious moments to go with it.

Outside of film, Star Wars has dabbled in comedy. Tag and Bink was a hilarious set of comics that showed how two Jedi flunkies accidentally influenced some of the movie's biggest events. Still, that's more of a palate cleanser for fans and it's doubtful that they would want to see that on the big screen.

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters next week, on May 25.
