Solo is The First Star Wars Movie Without C-3PO

Solo: A Star Wars Story is out to break some of the conventions fans have gotten used to, though some would argue that The Last Jedi beat it to the punch. Anyway, unlike Rian Johnson's controversial film, Solo looks to be a different beast since it takes place long before the first three Star Wars films and seems to be more of a heist film.

One tradition that the film will be breaking from is the omission of C-3PO. Believe it or not, the character has been in every Star Wars film that's come out thus far. Even in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, though it was basically a cameo appearance at that point.

During an interview with Uproxx, Solo screenwriters Lawrence and Jonathan Kasdan revealed that actor Anthony Daniels would not be reprising his role as C-3PO, though he would appear in the film in a different role.

"No, but Anthony Daniels is in the movie as a different character. In the Papillon type offshoot story, the Wookiee that helps them escape, Chewbacca's best friend, is played by Anthony Daniels – and beckons him to join them as they escape on a different ship."

While the droid has never been a major focus of the films, he was always put in a fun supporting role, so it's a shame that he won't be here, though it does make sense in the timeline. He will definitely return in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX.

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25, without C-3PO.
