Shonen Jump Editor Explains Why Super Saiyans Go Blond in Dragon Ball

Goku, Vegeta, and other Saiyans in the Dragon Ball franchise have transformed into Super Saiyan, a power-up form that gives them glowing hairdo, but some fans are still wondering why they're blond. Thanks to the Editor-in-Chief of the Weekly Shonen Jump, we now have an answer to that mystery.

Hiroyuki Nakano recently made an appearance on Fuji TV and did an interview with Nonstop!. The editor revealed the origins of the Super Saiyan look (via ANN).

Nakano said that series creator Akira Toriyama made Super Saiyans blond to help cut out work. Since inking black hair was time-consuming, Toriyama decided to give Super Saiyans blond hair to lessen the labor required to draw characters because yellow hair isn't colored in black-and-white manga.

Since the Weekly Shonen Jump is strict with its deadlines, Nakano stressed the importance of making the most out of time when it comes to drawing manga. According to the editor, Toriyama's decision to give Super Saiyans blond hair let creators "spend time on story and drawing cool pictures."

At this point, Goku's hair color has changed to reddish black, blue and silver. Goku Black, the antagonist introduced in Dragon Ball Super, has a form that changed his hair color to pink.
