Shazam!: Mark Strong Talks About His Villain; Recalls His Work On Green Lantern

Though Mark Strong may have played the loveable Merlin in the Kingsman franchise, a lot of fans haven't forgotten how cleverly he can play a villain onscreen. Despite the bomb that was Green Lantern, Strong played a pretty great Sinestro, and now it seems he's back to being a DC villain in Warner Bros' Shazam! movie.

Talking to Contact Music, Strong speaks about his role of Doctor Sivana:

"I'm playing an evil bastard called Doctor Sivana, they are always the best characters to play, the most fun… I was Sinestro in Green Lantern, which I though was a rather good film, but it didn't do what they wanted. So I feel like I've got unfinished business in the DC world. I played a pretty evil character in that, and he was meant to get even worse in the second one but that never happened, but I think I'm going to get the chance to do that in Shazam!, I hope so.''

Despite Strong playing an "evil bastard" for the movie, it seems that Shazam! is aiming to be one of the more light-hearted films of the DCEU. Strong goes on to explain:

"It's a funny film… It's about a young boy who can become a superhero but still remains a young boy so there's elements of Big, there's elements of Stranger Things. I think originally the comic outsold Superman in the 1940s.''

I'm definitely excited to check out the film. Aside from the refreshing change in tone for a DCEU movie, I think Strong has the chops to deliver one heck of a villain. I'm just hoping that he doesn't turn out to be like the rest of the DCEU baddies so far; for now, the only one I can probably remember fondly is General Zod, and he was chockfull of issues already. Joker, Lex Luthor, and Steppenwolf have been huge disappointments.

Shazam! is set to come out April of 2019.
