Shazam!: John Cena Casting Rumors Debunked

It was rumored earlier that WWE superstar John Cena was a frontrunner to star in Warner Bros' Shazam! movie, and a lot of people were hoping that it would lead to a smack down with Dwayne ‘The Rock' Johnson who would be playing Black Adam. Fans' hopes should be put to rest as the rumor has now been debunked.

According to The Wrap's Umberto Gonzalez, the rumors from The Hashtag Show are actually false:

Joshua Sasse, who is known for his work on the series Galavant, has also been debunked as a frontrunner. I guess we'll just have to wait a bit longer to see who's ready to match blows with Black Adam in the future.

For now, the movie is looking to cast two leads—one to play the young Billy Batson, and another to play the grown-up Captain Marvel a.k.a. Shazam. With Marvel Studios coming up with their own Captain Marvel movie in 2019, I'm thinking DC is going to stick to calling Batson's alter-ego ‘Shazam.'

Then again, ‘Shazam' is supposed to be the secret word that turns Batson into Captain Marvel. It wouldn't be so secret if he starts calling himself that.

There's still no official release date or synopsis for the Shazam! movie, but we do know that David F. Sandberg is directing the film with a script from Henry Gayden.
