Shazam! Director Builds Up The Powers of Mark Strong's Doctor Sivana

Shazam ended up being one of the best surprises from SDCC 2018, giving fans a fun trailer that captured the essence from the character's New 52 origin. The trailer focused on Billy Batson's journey and his powers but it did give us a brief glimpse at Mark Strong's version of Doctor Sivana, who isn't a shriveled up scientist but a man strong enough to stop a Shazam punch.

Director David Sandberg discussed this version of Doctor Sivana to EW, who seems to be pretty powerful in his own right. Interestingly enough, Sandberg revealed that Sivana also encountered the wizard as a child but was rejected and didn't receive his powers. Since then, Sivana has been doing research to get powers similar to the ones Billy now has.

"And it's not just him, really, it's … something else … that lent him his powers … he can do some things that Shazam can't. The danger in some films is the bad guy has the same powers as the good guy. [Sivana] has an extra thing, extra dynamic, that takes care of that…."

The director doesn't say how Sivana will be getting his powers, so we'll have to watch the film to find that out. Sandberg did stress that Sivana wouldn't have the exact same abilities as Shazam since he feels too many superhero movies have done the "villain with the same powers as the hero" trope.

Mentioning that it was "something else" that gave Sivana these powers is going to get plenty of fans talking. Could it be Black Adam? The evil caterpillar Mister Mind? The theories are endless right now.

Shazam comes to theaters on April 5, 2019.
