The Predator franchise has never been known for its continuity, and apparently, Shane Black's upcoming The Predator is about to fix that. Previous films of the franchise have never shown any connection to each other featuring completely new faces and aliens with each installment. Now, the filmmakers of the new Predator movie are planning to change that by setting up the movie in 2018.
Speaking to Cinema Blend, director Shane Black explains how setting up the movie in 2018 and tying it back to the original movie from 1987 will work to solidify the franchise. He said:
The trick is to go back in time and look at the other earlier films and say, for instance, in the first movie, what is there? Is there a scene in here that suggests something that we can almost in retrospect say, ‘See, it was set up in the first one!'? How do we find that little niche?
Cinematic universes nowadays have become great franchises due to the fact that fans have followed the interesting and complex stories of the characters, which are all interwoven with each franchise installment. The Predator series isn't known for this, but Black's approach looks like a strategic one considering the rise of popularity of franchises with established continuities.
It makes sense that he chose to introduce this approach with 2018's The Predator.
Black's The Predator is currently in its scripting stage, with filming set to take place late this year. The film will most likely be a big-budget project once it gets off the ground and works toward its March 2, 2018 release. Naturally, fans are in safe hands with Shane Black. He certainly knows what he's doing, and we couldn't be more excited for the franchise.
