Oscar-winning actor Russel Crowe was asked to consider playing Cable in Deadpool 2. The request was made by Deadpool creator Rob Liefield and it was done through a Tweet. The response by the Aussie star was swift and, true to his style, made his position clear.
LIefield started the Twitter thread by tweeting Crowe:
Crowe replied back with a couple of his own Tweets:
Many fans soon joined in the discussion and asked Crowe to give the idea a shot. Liefield eventually apologized and said that he was a huge fan of the actor, but his suggestion was "poorly worded." Actually, it was - actors of Crowe's stature are asked (not publicly, anyway) to do what is essentially an audition; instead, scripts are offered to them.
On the other hand, Liefield does have a point. While there has been buzz that Pierce Brosnan is the number one contender to play Cable, Crowe has the heft and the no-nonsense brutality, and his fighting and combat skills cover a lot of weaponry from archery, guns, to sword clashes.
Crowe's physicality and his expertise in wielding the weapons of war are so much a part of him, that he made a fighter out of the usually nerdy Jor-El, Superman's father, in The Man of Steel.
The clip below of his award-winning turn in Gladiator reminds us of how much of a bad-ass Crowe can be.
He really should reconsider playing Cable.
Deadpool 2, directed by David Leitch and starring Ryan Reynolds, will be released in theaters on March 2, 2018.
