Ron Howard Explains Why He Chose To Join Solo: A Star Wars Story

It might not have taken Lucasfilm that long to have Ron Howard replace original Solo: A Star Wars Story directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, but the filmmaker behind A Beautiful Mind had a few hesitations taking over the Star Wars spinoff.

Howard recently spoke with Empire Magazine about Solo: A Star Wars Story (via Comic Book), and during the interview the director admitted that he was a bit uncertain joining the franchise, only jumping in because he felt like he could help the production.

"I jumped in as a bit of an adventure really, a kind of cinematic adventure for Ron," Howard explained. "It wasn't long before I had fallen completely in love with it, and I feel passionate and connected to this movie as anything I've done. It's been an exciting, exciting experience. I came in as a true believer in what the movie could be. I really loved the story, I thought the script was strong. I was very excited about the cast. So it was easy for me to be enthusiastic."

Since he signed on to Solo Howard seems to have been fully taken in by the work, posting photos taken from the set to tease fans and giving out updates online from time to time. Filming a majority of the footage that's making the final cut of the Star Wars spinoff, Howard is receiving sole director credit for Solo.

Lord and Miller who also filmed footage for the Star Wars movie are both receiving executive producers credit for the film. Though some of their footage will have been replaced by shots taken by Howard, the two directors had been deep into production for Solo before Lucasfilm decided that it had enough of the improve and the "creative differences" with the comic filmmakers.

Solo: A Star Wars Story premieres May 25 this year.
