Rogue One Reshoots Reportedly Due To Mismatched “Tone” With Previous Star Wars Films

News of a "crisis" within Disney broke yesterday claiming that executives were unsatisfied with director Gareth Edwards' first cut of the film after seeing test screenings. For this reason, the movie has to undergo another four weeks of reshoots. Reports claim that a source said the reshoots are due to Rogue One not being at par with the standards of The Force Awakens.

Apparently though, there's another reason for the reshoots.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, another main reason for the executive decision was that the higher ups within Disney felt that the "tone" that Rogue One has doesn't "match" the tone of its predecessors, specifically A New Hope.

A source reportedly said:

This is the closest thing to a prequel ever. This takes place just before 'A New Hope' and leads up to the 10 minutes before that classic film begins. You have to match the tone!

While this reasoning somehow aligns with previous reports from various media outlets, this new update on the reshoots provides a bit more detail. If the movie does indeed begin 10 minutes prior to A New Hope, this confirms Darth Vader's appearance, and possibly Princess Leia's.

In addition, it would confirm previous reports that the movie will be incredibly dark and brutal, specifically Darth Vader's.

While the tonal shift would probably rub the executives the wrong way, the movie's synopsis does point to its focus being on the Rebels against the Emperor's rule. In addition, it is an oncoming war. Isn't that enough reason for the film to be grittier?

In any case, it's highly likely that questions regarding those reshoots will be answered at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016, where Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and director Gareth Edwards will be appearing for a Rogue One panel.

Movie Synopsis:

Following the foundation of the Galactic Empire, a wayward band of Rebel fighters comes together to carry out a desperate mission: to steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor's rule.
