Rogue One Concept Artists Hint at New Story & Han Solo Spinoff Details

Concept artists play a huge role in any film, particularly those that make good use of character and location designs. Such is the case in most Star Wars movies, like the recent success Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

At the recent signing and talk held with costume designers and concept artists (via Star Wars Hyperdrive), a lot of those on the panel revealed some new details about the process and even hints of who's on board for the Star Wars Han Solo spinoff movie.

Those on the panel included Dave Crossman, Glyn Dillon, Matt Allsopp, Adam Brockbank, Will Htay, Vincent, Jenkins, and Jon McCoy. The source had listed a few pointers from the Q&A and talk.

While the art for the upcoming The Art of Rogue One book wasn't available for photos, provided a good venue for some pointers about the planning stage of the movie. For instance, the world was cohesive because director Gareth Edwards had worked closely with the concept artists.

This went to the point that every character onscreen wasn't created at random. Rather, everyone had some background story that may not be obvious in the film, but this was required so they had a reason to be in Rogue One.

The concept artists and pretty much the crew had made great use of their imagination and creativity during the whole process. They made use of real models to create mockups and sketches of these ideas. There was even one story for the hover tank used in the film. Since their budget was constrained, the hover tank was designed using an existing tank, so they could keep themselves from having to compromise with a CGI-heavy output.

Of course, part of the creation process also meant going back to the classic material in Star Wars. This was the inspiration for the otherworldly and worldly designs that they would use. They even took inspiration from the work of Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston, who had been responsible for creating the Star Wars language.

If you loved Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, then you'd also be happy to know that the concept artists from that movie will also be working on both Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi and the still untitled Han Solo spinoff movie. They've already also worked on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so this should mean great continuity for the story.
