Red Dead Redemption 3 has been discussed quite a lot in the past few years, but we've gone without an update for quite a while. The reviews for the first game in the series were overwhelmingly positive, giving creators the green light to release a second game in 2018 – but what about a third? In this article, we share all the information currently available for Red Dead Redemption 3 including its release date, story speculation, and more!

Red Dead Redemption Overview

New to the games? Red Dead Redemption is an action-adventure video game by Rockstar Games, also known for Grand Theft Auto and other big titles. Set in the early 1910s US, it follows John Marston, whose life of crime comes back to haunt him when his family is taken hostage, forcing him to confront his former fellow gang members.

The game is considered a spiritual successor to Red Dead Revolver which came out in 2004, which is also worth checking out if you're up for something more vintage.

As for Red Dead Redemption 2, it's set a bit further in the past, in 1899. The main character is Arthur Morgan, a gang member who must come to terms with the decline of the Wild West ideal and survive several threats. John Marston also appears.

Red Dead Redemption 3 Release Date

Sadly, there is currently no release date for Red Dead Redemption 3. At this point, we can only speculate, especially since Rockstar Games are rumored to be working on a new Grand Theft Auto game at the moment. Therefore, it's assumed the Red Dead Redemption 3 is currently not in the making. But 8 years passed between the first and second RDR games, so it wouldn't be unthinkable for RDR3 to make an appearance as late as 2026.

Red Dead Redemption 3 Story

The death of the "Old West" and resistance to change are major themes in the first installments of Red Dead Redemption. That being the case, setting the story of Red Dead Redemption any later than the 1920s would be a bit of a double-edged sword. While it would be interesting to see the rapid changes brought about by technology and economic depression, or even follow a character by the so-called "Lost Generation," this would mean a significant tone change.

On the other hand, setting it before the 1890s would mean that the fight against inevitable change would likely be less poignant, plus it wouldn't necessarily be satisfying if each new game was further and further in the past. This is not to say that it would not be interesting for gamers to temporarily live in the 1800s through a new character!

Fans have thought of several characters who could potentially be protagonists if a new Red Dead Redemption game was to be made. Sadie Adler, a member of the Van der Linde gang, who wants to avenge her dead husband, would be an interesting candidate, and a female protagonist would be a breath of fresh air as we do need more female protagonists in video games.

Red Dead Redemption 3 Rumors

In a 2018 interview, director Dan Houser suggested that if the second game of the series sold well, he would consider creating Red Dead Redemption 3 and many fans cling to that since RDR 2 is one of the most successful games of its time.

While the rumors about Grand Theft Auto 6 are currently stronger, we would definitely not write of RDR 3 just yet.
